[VC Speech]: #BikoRobingCeremony
"At the dawn of democracy in 1994, amidst the scramble for political and economic positions, there was never any record of Mama seeking a special dispensation or recognition for the hardships and political harassment she endured during Apartheid. At no point did she express any sense of entitlement.
It is with immense pride and admiration that the Rhodes University community has had this opportunity to honour and celebrate you, Mama, here in Ginsberg, in the company of your community while you are still with us in the flesh.
Your courage, compassion, and relentless pursuit of a better life for the less privileged in our society are truly inspiring and remind us all of the power of one determined individual to make a positive change in the world."

[ACCEPTANCE SPEECH]: #BikoRobingCeremony
"Vice-Chancellor Professor Sizwe Mabizela, you promised then that you would make the time to personally complete the process, preferably in my community. This is not the first time that you embraced me so warmly...
But the reason that I accepted the honour is that it was a product of more than just your personal love for an old lady like me. It was based on rigour."

[UNDERWAY]: #BikoRobingCeremony
‘Asazinto ngaye’: Re-centering the Life and Contributions of Nontsikelelo ‘Ntsiki’ Biko (née Mashalaba)
In 1977, after Steve Biko was brutally murdered while in police detention, Nontsikelelo ‘Ntsiki’ Biko (née Mashalaba) entered into public memory as a “widow.”
It should inspire us to pause as a society and question why women in partnerships with political men, particularly during the liberation struggle, are captured as auxiliaries to these men. While there is nothing wrong with being a widow, it is questionable that stories of women like Biko (née Mashalaba) remain untold.
