Education Summit

27 – 28 January 2024

The Summit will be a ground-breaking, multi-stakeholder initiative. Taking place in Makhanda, it will involve key education stakeholders in reflecting on key educational gains and challenges of the past decade.

Orientation Festival

04 February 2024

RU120 is about human relations, life-long partnerships, and the creation of intergenerational dreams. The Orientation Cocktail will focus on expanding the alumni network and the unity of the Friends of Rhodes University. This fun and forward-thinking event will celebrate generations past, present, and future.
Event starts 17:30 until late.

Project Launch Activation

23 February 2024

The University community will assemble on the Great Field for an iconic drone picture formation in the form of RU120. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sizwe Mabizela, will kick off the RU120  anniversary celebrations.

Doha debates

Rhodes University students will engage in a global debate of those who believe that the world can be a better place if we make room to listen to and understand all sides of an issue.

RU Scholarship: Critical Reflections

01 March 2024

Emeritus Professor Paul Maylam will give critical reflections on the Rhodes University scholarship. The lecture will focus on “The Intellectual History of Rhodes University.”

Africa Europe Cluster of Research Excellence

08 March 2024

The Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence (CoRE) bring together distinguished researchers from across Africa and Europe. Rhodes University co-leads two CoRE and is a core partner on several others. Each CoRE addresses key global societal challenges.

Fun and celebration the RU way. The Graduation Ball will offer a night of good food, good music and great fun with graduates, their families, and visitors.

Orchestral ensemble performance

This orchestral extravaganza will include the Nelson Mandela University Orchestra, Rhodes University Orchestra, and the Makhanda Community Orchestra.

Journalism Summit

 04 – 06 April 2024

The Journalism Summit will be an exposition of the role of journalism in the world today, as the cornerstone of democracy and human advancement. This will offer deep critical reflections on the state of journalism today, its contributions, and the challenges it faces in a fast-changing society.

eNCA elections town hall debate

 21 April 2024

eNCA, led by Masego Rahlaga, will host a LIVE town hall debate on the upcoming elections. The purpose is to foster informed discourse on issues pivotal to our nation’s progress – from corruption, to crime, to service delivery. Five Rhodes University experts will participate as panellists.

Chemistry/Pharmacy building unveiling

This major infrastructure restoration project will culminate in the unveiling of a state-of-the-art teaching and learning, as well as a research and innovation-centred facility.

Opening of the Institute for Nanotechnology

A celebratory programme at one of the world’s great repositories of African music will include symposiums, exhibitions, and publications.

HonDoc Music Festival

07 September 2024

A prominent HonDoc is expected to headline a special music event in the week of the Convocation meeting.

90th Anniversary of the Rowing Club

12 – 14 September 2024

The RU Rowing club turns 90 in 2024. There will be a Virtual Rowing Regatta with Garthdee House (Aberdeen Scotland) and Alumni dinner to celebrate this event.

Orchestra performance

11 October 2024

A second orchestral extravaganza from various orchestras will end the year on a high note!

Knocking-on-Heavens-Door homecoming

A weekend filled with activities for this group of Alumni who attended Rhodes University between 1965 and 1975.

The naming of the Great Field to “The Ally Weakley Great Field.” A sports Alumni Dinner will be held in the evening.

One of the key strategic goals of RU120 is to fill the gap for to the so-called “missing middle.”
